PRE-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES: Wednesday, May 22

IDEA Pre-Conference Educational Session ($50 fee with registration, available to full conference attendees)

9:00am - 12:00pm

Registrants will have the opportunity to attend one pre-conference session which will be held Wednesday morning prior to the conference. Breakfast will be included with the session beginning promptly at 9:00am. Lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the Pre-Conference Session. The conference opening session will begin at 1:00pm.

Topic: ADDRESSING TOKENISM AND EXCEPTIONALISM IN HIGHER EDUCATION ADMISSIONS
Black, Indigenous, and people of color tend to have a profoundly different experience of the university system than their white peers; this is by design. The first part of the proposed pre-conference session will present the root causes of racial inequities in higher educational contexts. The second portion will provide terminology, strategy, and facilitated group discussion.
Part one of the pre-conference will demonstrate the causal relationship between law, policy, and current conditions in our educational systems. The survey will include current regional and national data that elucidate the reasons for the underrepresentation of BIPOC students at Oregon 2- and 4-year colleges and universities.
It is not enough to admit BIPOC students; institutions themselves need to be prepared to support these young people through every step of their educational journey.
This three-hour pre-conference session aims to provide admissions professionals a space to dialogue and develop new strategies for creating educational spaces where BIPOC students belong.

Tour of Western Oregon University and Willamette University ($25 fee with registration)

7:45am - 12:00pm

Take a bus tour of the campuses of Western Oregon University and Willamette University. Please note: the college tour will overlap with the pre-conference session, so participants are not able to register for both.

Light morning refreshments and lunch will be included.

COUNSELOR COLLEGE FAIR & CARD SWAP ($50 fee)

To qualify to exhibit at the College Fair & Card Swap, you must be attending the conference and representing a college or university, a community-based organization that provides outreach to students, or a membership driven non-profit professional organization that services a local or state population with less than 1,000 individual members. A $50 fee is required to exhibit at the conference College Fair & Card Swap. Attendees of the fair (School Counselors, Independent Counselors, CBO's, etc.) are not required to submit payment.

  • Note: Only one person from your institution or organization is required to register (and pay) for the fair. If more than one individual from your institution/organization registers and pays for the fair, the conference committee can offer you a refund for the fair minus a $25 processing fee.

  • Representatives will share an 8 ft. table with one other organization.
